Refractive Errors

Refractive errors occur when the eye fails to bend light correctly, preventing it from focusing sharply on the retina.

What are refractive errors?

Refractive errors occur when the eye fails to bend light correctly, preventing it from focusing sharply on the retina. This optical misalignment results in blurred vision, affecting either your nearby or distant sight. These conditions are highly common, can develop at any stage of life, and often progress over time.

Common symptoms

Because refractive errors can progress gradually, the initial signs are often difficult to detect early on. As the condition advances, you may experience:

Types of refractive errors

The primary categories of refractive errors include:

Myopia (short-sightedness)

Distant objects appear blurry while close-up vision remains clear. This is typically caused by the eyeball being slightly elongated.

What causes refractive errors?

At their core, refractive errors are caused by structural variations within the eye. Contributing factors include:

  • Anatomical changes in eyeball length (being too short or too long)
  • An asymmetrical or irregular shape of the cornea
  • Age-related alterations in the density or flexibility of the lens
  • Natural, progressive aging processes within the eye
  • Inherited genetic factors and family history

While myopia and astigmatism are frequently detected during childhood, presbyopia universally emerges as we reach middle age.

Treatment & vision correction

Following a comprehensive assessment of your eye health and lifestyle, our specialists will guide you toward the most suitable solution. Treatments include both non-surgical and surgical approaches:

Non-surgical

  • Prescription Glasses: Including single-vision, bifocal, or seamless progressive lenses.
  • Contact Lenses: Available in soft, rigid, or advanced specialty designs (such as toric and multifocal).

How refractive errors are diagnosed

Our ophthalmologists conduct highly comprehensive clinical eye exams to accurately diagnose any refractive error. Testing may include:

Visual acuity testing

Refraction assessments

Slit-lamp

Eye dilation

  • Yes. Certain refractive errors may progress over time.
  • Myopia commonly progresses while children and teenagers are still growing.
  • Presbyopia also develops gradually as part of the natural ageing process.
  • Yes. Many refractive errors can be corrected with prescription glasses or contact lenses.
  • Surgical correction is optional and is considered only after a comprehensive clinical assessment.
  • Myopia causes distant objects to appear blurry.
  • Hyperopia commonly makes nearby objects difficult to focus on and may also affect distance vision, depending on its severity.
  • Astigmatism can cause blurred or distorted vision at different distances because of irregular curvature of the cornea or lens.

Suitability depends on factors such as:

  • Age and prescription stability
  • Type and degree of refractive error
  • Corneal thickness and shape for LASIK or PRK
  • Anterior chamber depth and corneal endothelial health for ICL
  • Overall eye health and general medical condition
  • Individual visual needs and lifestyle

A comprehensive eye examination is required to determine which procedure, if any, may be appropriate.

  • Most patients can go home after the procedure.
  • Dilating eye drops may cause temporary blurred vision.
  • Your doctor may check your eye pressure or recommend a review appointment after the procedure.
